A full-time remote emergency teleradiologist role for physicians who want predictable, defined overnight (nighthawk) work, with no call and no shifting roster, so you can plan your life with real consistency. You read high-acuity emergent volume in a fully remote environment on a 7-on/7-off or 7-on/14-off rotation, productivity-based with no fixed read quotas.
vRad is the largest teleradiology practice in the United States, supporting more than 1,600 healthcare facilities nationwide. More than 500 radiologists practice at vRad, helping deliver care across a broad mix of hospitals and health systems. vRad’s mission is to bring exceptional radiology care to all patients. Anytime. Anywhere. Radiologists at vRad practice in a fully remote environment with established operational support, dedicated IT resources, and workflow technology built specifically for remote reading.
This role focuses on overnight, emergent interpretations across a broad mix of hospitals and health systems nationwide. Physicians primarily interpret STAT and urgent diagnostic imaging studies in a single reading environment that brings together PACS, RIS, dictation, reporting, and operational support. The workflow is designed to reduce administrative friction, support efficient case prioritization, and help radiologists stay focused on clinical interpretation. Physicians also have fast, easy access to subspecialist colleagues for consults anytime.
Overnight at vRad is the deep-night (nighthawk) shift: a highly emergent case mix from emergency departments across the country, read into the early-morning hours. Radiologists enjoy that when your shift ends, it ends, with no obligation to stay for one more case, and you can take a break when you need one. You’re never the only radiologist on. Unlike a solo hospital night call, where whatever comes in is yours to read, instant peer and subspecialist consults are available around the clock, and any case you’d rather not read can be transferred to another radiologist. Overnight hours are paid at a higher rate, and extra shifts are there if you want them.
Primarily emergent/ED studies. CT 45%, X-Ray 32%, CTA 11%, Ultrasound 8%, MRI 3%.
vRad’s compensation is transparent and productivity-based, and every radiologist reads on the same published rates regardless of tenure. You’re paid by vRad’s Work Unit, calibrated to the time and effort each study takes (which also removes the incentive to cherry-pick), and you can track your earnings in real time. There are no minimum reading quotas; shift rates are published and consistent, with higher pay for nights, weekends, and holidays, and a bonus rate if you choose to pick up extra shifts, so your income stays in your control. For this role, estimated annual compensation runs $450,000-$900,000+, depending on the shifts you work.
Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k), Supplemental Life, Disability, VITAL WorkLife, and Malpractice coverage. (W2 roles.)
This role is supported by the vRad Platform, our proprietary reading environment built specifically for radiologist workflows and backed by in-house IT and operations teams. Technology and support include:
Physicians read from a home workstation within an established remote clinical environment, backed by 24/7/365 in-house support, so you’re never left managing interruptions on your own.
vRad overnight shifts are typically an 8hr block between 6p-6a, offered as 7-on/7-off or 7-on/14-off.
Predominantly emergent. A typical vRad overnight mix is about 45% CT, 32% X-ray, 11% CTA, 8% ultrasound, and 3% MRI.
Yes. At vRad, deep nights and other less-conventional hours carry higher published shift rates, with weekend and holiday premiums on top. Because you’re paid by the Work Unit with no quota, your earnings track the shifts you choose, and extra shifts pay at a bonus rate.
You’re never reading alone at vRad. Instant peer and subspecialist consults are built into the platform, and any case can be transferred to a colleague when clinically appropriate. A 24/7 in-house support team backs you up too, a clear contrast with solo hospital night call.
