vRad eliminated geographic and technical barriers, allowing radiologists to provide diagnostic imaging interpretations for patients anywhere in the country. Since 2001, vRad has been at the forefront of teleradiology.
The digitization of medical imaging and high-speed communications networks paved the way for teleradiology. On July 23, 2001, Minnesota radiologists Sean Casey, MD, and Eduard Michel, MD, PhD, founded Virtual Radiologic Consultants, one of the world’s first practices specializing in remote radiology interpretations.
vRad introduced the vRad Grip, inspired by “The Claw” gaming device from Australia. This innovation made image interaction faster for radiologists and remains a key feature of our reading platform.
vRad earned the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval® and launched its Quality Assurance Program, eventually achieving radiology’s highest documented accuracy rates. This year also marked the issuance of our first final radiology report, saving clients time and setting a new industry standard.
With commercial technologies unable to meet our unique needs, vRad established an internal engineering team and that same year released a patented Automated Study Assigner, reducing turnaround times and scaling operations. vRad also hired a field sales team to serve its rapidly growing client base.
The introduction of HL7 workflow automations significantly improved the accuracy and utility of radiology information. By 2020, vRad had integrated with over 150,000 imaging devices and all major EMR systems.
vRad exceeded 100 radiologists and was honored as an Inc. 500 Fastest-Growing Company.
vRad was named the #1 teleradiology provider by KLAS, earning praise for superior service and clinical excellence.
vRad launched its proprietary vRad PACS, a foundational technology for what would become the vRad Platform in 2024.
vRad acquired Nighthawk Radiology, growing to 325 radiologists. Auto-fetched priors were also introduced, enhancing clinical insights and efficiency.
vRad launched their groundbreaking breast imaging service, improving subspecialist access for women nationwide.
vRad received the AuntMinnie Best of Radiology Award for its impactful global contributions with Doctors Without Borders.
The Critical Finding Auto-Dialer reduced critical finding connection times to as little as 2 minutes. Benjamin W. Strong, MD, was also appointed as Chief Medical Officer.
vRad processed 1 billion images annually, introduced 1-click Custom Structured Reports, and launched a new Trauma Protocol to reduce turnaround times for critical patients. A breakthrough in data normalization paved the way for analytics and AI development.
vRad released the first AI model for worklist prioritization, years ahead of the industry, accelerating care for patients with intracranial hemorrhage.
vRad launched a Stroke Protocol, reducing turnaround times for stroke patients, and received FDA clearance for vRad PACS with mammography.
vRad first recognized as a StarTribune Top Workplace. Live Video Diagnostics also launched, offering face-to-face care for breast imaging patients.
vRad’s philanthropic effort was founded, raising over $1M by 2025, to provide imaging resources to underserved patients around the world.
A vRad radiologist read one of the first known U.S. COVID-19 CT scans and delivered one of the first global COVID-19 CME lectures. Later that year, vRad joined Radiology Partners.
vRad achieved SOC 2 Type II compliance for data security and earned the Best of AJR Award for its research on radiologist performance.
vRad’s Breast Imaging Program reached a new milestone, interpreting 225,000 annual studies and providing early cancer detection in over 140 communities.
